STATISTICS ON DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

On behalf of Craig E. Gibbs, Attorney at Law posted in criminal defense on Friday, December 23, 2016.

Every minute throughout the United States approximately 20 Americans are victims of physical abuse by their partner. More than 20,000 phone calls are made to domestic violence hotlines seeking help every day. And, 15 percent of all violent crimes in the United States occur from an intimate partner.

These numbers are alarming, to say the least. And the specifics are even more staggering. In a lifetime, approximately one in three females and one in four males will be victim to violence from their intimate partner. Yet only about one-third of victims of physical abuse ever receive care for their injuries. And victims of domestic violence are more likely to subsequently suffer from depression and suicidal tendencies.

It is no wonder that the laws in the United States take domestic violence cases very seriously. A mere allegation can lead to significant consequences. And, a conviction can lead to severe penalties, including protection orders, a loss of child custody, fines and potentially substantial prison time. But, not everyone who is accused is guilty. It is not uncommon for a spouse or intimate partner to make false claims and allegations in an effort to sway the courts or even public opinion about a person.

To fight these charges and to protect yourself, your reputation and your future, it is important to find the right criminal defense strategy. Having the right approach to facing the charges can make all the difference in the world, and your rights, your future and your life are worth protecting.
