DOES THE TYPE OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE IMPACT INTOXICATION?

On behalf of Craig E. Gibbs, Attorney at Law on Tuesday, June 19, 2018.

You may be like many other New Orleans residents who like to indulge in alcoholic beverages now and again. You likely have many opportunities to consume alcohol whether you are relaxing at home or are out at a party. While you could have a go-to drink that you consume regularly, you may also not feel afraid to try out different types of beverages depending on your mood and the venue.

Of course, if you have work the next day or do not feel like letting yourself go too much, the thought may cross your mind to simply stick with beer as other beverages may affect you more drastically. However, that notion may not be entirely correct. As of now, researchers have not found a definitive answer as to whether the type of alcoholic beverage consumed has a greater impact on an individual.

Amount of alcohol in standard drinks

Many factors can impact how quickly a person becomes intoxicated. Some people may think that different types of alcoholic beverages will cause them to become intoxicated more quickly because they have higher or lower alcohol content levels. However, the amount of ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, in these beverage is the same, and the ethanol is what leads to drunkenness. For example, 5 ounces of wine may contain 12 percent alcohol and a 12 ounce beer may contain 5 percent alcohol, but they both contain about 14 grams of ethanol.

Factors that may have greater influence

Of course, anyone who has consumed various types of alcoholic beverages may attest to differences in the way they feel when drinking one type of beverage over another. However, other factors may come into play more than the amount of alcohol in the drinks.

A major factor relates to your emotions. If you are out with friends having an exciting time, you may knock back a few shots in rapid succession. In this situation, your body is ingesting more ethanol more quickly than if you were at a restaurant sipping wine or simply relaxing with a beer at home. So the intoxicating effect may have to do more with your mental state at the time and the number of drinks you consume rather than the amount of alcohol in a particular beverage.

Pay attention to your drinks

Of course, even if you are just having a few beers or a couple of glasses of wine, you could still quickly reach or exceed the legal blood alcohol concentration level for driving. If an officer does stop your vehicle and you end up facing charges for DUI, you may want to gain information on how to handle these allegations in the best manner possible.
