When you celebrated your birthday at age 21, festivities might have included your first “legal” drink of alcohol. In fact, many families consider it a special birthday custom for parents to imbibe with a son or daughter who has come of age. While there is nothing inherently wrong with that idea, it can be problematic for those who are prone toward addiction.

Alcohol consumption can lead to all sorts of problems if you struggle with substance abuse or suffer a lapse in judgment when it comes time to decide whether or not to get behind the wheel of a car to drive after you’ve been drinking. You could not only be placing your own and other people’s safety at risk, you can also wind up facing drunk driving charges. If alcohol issues have thrown your life off-course, you’ll be glad to know there are strong support networks in place to help you get back on track.

Alcohol consumption is prevalent for many reasons – both good and bad

While drinking alcohol often accompanies parties and celebrations, many Louisiana residents say they drink for other reasons as well. Perhaps you relate to one or more of the following:

  • Some say they drink alcohol because it helps them relieve stress. That’s because alcohol has properties that inhibit feelings of anxiety.
  • If you’re closer to age 21 than 30 or beyond, you may drink alcohol to help you feel like you fit in with your peers. In fact, a lot of people your age say that their friends pressure them into drinking.
  • If you’ve always been a rather shy type of person, you may feel a connection with those who drink to help them loosen up in social settings. Some refer to alcohol as liquid courage.
  • There are large numbers of people who want to stop drinking alcohol but are struggling because their bodies and minds have become addicted to the substance.

You may have entirely different reasons for drinking or you may relate to one or more of the items mentioned here. The bottom line is that if you drink then drive, you could risk causing an accident on the road, and you may also land in jail if a police officer pulls you over and determines probable cause to arrest you on a DWI suspicion.

If that happens

If you need support to try to overcome a substance abuse problem, you can tap into many local resources for programs and counseling services that can be quite helpful. If the alcohol-related problems you are currently facing are legal ones, then the services of an experienced attorney could be your best bet to help you address those matters as well.
